Henry Hoffman is a multidisciplinary artist born and currently living in London. His work explores themes of memory, symbolism, and traces —elements he believes are increasingly vital in contemporary life. His paintings focus on nostalgia and our innate ability as viewers to create story through abstraction. Henry’s recent body of work centres around materiality, how beauty can be extracted from materials and craft.
With a keen interest in materials that have lived a life previously, many of the works center on the idea that nothing is new, things can be taken from their previous existence and thrust into a different world, conveying fresh ideas and heightening an objects existence. With a nod to antiques or traditional craftsmanship, his work emphasises the depth and emotional resonance carried by aged materials—often more captivating than the new or untouched.
The work displays how the many forms of a person, place or thing gives the capacity for anyone to create their own reality; an environment of their own design. Hoffman shows that abstraction creates a human moment; a trace of what was once. A feeling of sonder.
